Jadon Sancho’s future appeared destined to lie away from Manchester United but crisis talks with Erik ten Hag seem to have given the winger a lifeline at Old Trafford as he returns to training

Erik ten Hag has broken his silence on mending his feud with Jadon Sancho – but refused to say if the winger has a future at Manchester United.

Sancho, exiled by Ten Hag after effectively branding his boss a liar on social media, spent the second half of last season on loan at former club Borussia Dortmund. But England international Sancho – who failed to make Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad – is now back at United, having resolved his differences with Ten Hag in a meeting between the pair.

Speaking publicly for the first time since making up with Sancho, Ten Hag said their bust-up was now consigned to the past – but was tight-lipped when asked if the 24-year-old has a future under him.

“As we said, we’ve drawn the line,” said Ten Hag, when asked about Sancho. “Manchester United needs good players and Jadon is a good player. We have drawn that line and we move on.”

Pushed on whether the truce with Sancho represented a fresh start for the £73million star, Ten Hag would only say: “We’ve drawn the line. We move on.”

Sancho was made to train on his own after publicly contradicting Ten Hag’s reasons for leaving him out of United’s matchday squad to face Arsenal last season. Ten Hag claimed Sancho was left out of the squad because of poor training performances in the build-up to the 3-1 defeat last September, only for Sancho to contest that view on social media.

Man United’s manager will hope that the reintroduction of first team stars will improve his side performances in pre-season. Sancho was one of six players left at home as United lost to Rosenborg in the first friendly of the summer.

“In top football, we have much higher standards, and as an individual you must make sure you are fit. I know you cannot be match fit at this moment, so we need these games to get there.

“I know we were playing against players who have a much higher fitness level but still, we are Manchester United and players from Manchester United should perform better.”
