There are very few weaknesses’ in Arne Slot’s squad but centre-back remains an area of concern. With Joel Matip departing, the club are in need of a replacement and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi fits the bill.
Liverpool-linked Leny Yoro has reportedly agreed to join Manchester United this summer in a deal rising to €70million (£58.7m). The Reds were among several clubs linked with the Lille centre-back who is rated as one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
Yoro made 44 appearances for Lille last season with his performances helping the Ligue 1 side end the campaign in fourth and reach the Europa Conference League quarter-finals. But with the 18-year-old now set for a move to Old Trafford, it simplifies Liverpool’s centre-back search.
The ECHO understands that Liverpool’s interest in Yoro was always regarded outside their intended business for the summer, but with the young Frenchman seemingly off to Old Trafford, the Reds must now go all out to sign Guehi, who continues to be linked with a move to Anfield. The 24-year-old has Premier League experience and is at an age where he will be looking to take the next steps in his career by joining a club who are looking to compete for major trophies.
With Slot facing the unenviable task of replacing the club’s legendary German manager, Jurgen Klopp, the Dutchman will be hoping for a statement signing this summer, to signal that they are ready to challenge for Premier League and Champions League success in 2024/25.
Guehi’s impressive performances for the Three Lions this summer played a key role in Gareth Southgate’s side reaching the final against Spain in Berlin. The Palace defender shone in central defence after starting in all but one game for England in Germany at Euro 2024 this summer.
United had also been tentatively linked with a move for Guehi, but it appears their focus is firmly elsewhere. It means Liverpool now have the green light to press ahead with signing Guehi without having to worry about their rivals.
A big summer lies ahead at Anfield and the signing of Guehi would somewhat ease a few nerves over whether the Reds will be able to compete with Manchester City and Arsenal under Slot.
